‘Before LighterLife, I didn’t see the point in eating healthily as it didn’t seem to affect my weight. Rather than seeing healthy eating as important to my life whatever my weight, I saw it purely how it affected my weight.

I also found myself in a vicious cycle. I was eating a lot of processed foods, all of which were high in sugar. Once I started I found that I couldn’t stop. I would get a quick sugar high, followed by a crash and a craving for more sugar. It also left me feeling hungry all the time. What I didn’t realise was that it wasn’t food that I was hungry for.

There were two moments that caused me to take action. Photographs of me and my friends revealed that I had become ‘The fat friend’. I wasn’t happy about it but I could almost live with it. But not being able to buy clothes that fit for an impromptu night out was the trigger moment I needed to take action.

Going to group was like having a ready-made support system

My LighterLife Group was invaluable. It was really nice being with like minded people who understood everything I was going through. It was made clear from the start that we didn’t have to share the details of our weight loss if we didn’t want to. But we all did so it became a joint journey where we could relate to the tough parts and celebrate each other’s successes. It was great having a ready-made support network.

Going in to Management is essential for long-term success. You have to re-learn your eating as you will accidentally fall in to the same traps you’ve been falling into your whole life if you don’t.

It’s not enough just eating smaller portions of what you were eating before. The same problems will resurface.

I can finally be me and now I’ve found things I never thought I could do

When I started losing weight my husband and I started ice skating and ballroom dancing. We didn’t think of it as exercise – it was fun! The exercise part of it was a side benefit and it was fun to join new groups and make new friends – ones who had never known me as the overweight girl. I was just Sarah. I didn’t feel like ‘the fat one’ or the one who had to overcompensate by being loud or jolly. I could be me.

If I told Sarah of 2006 that she could lose weigh she would never have believed it. The best part of losing weight for me, aside from being healthier and more confident is that my daughter is growing up in a household where healthy eating is the norm and Mummy and Daddy go running for fun’.
