“I Lost 40lbs, But the Biggest Change Was Getting My Life Back” – Nik’s Story

I lost 40lbs, but the biggest change was getting my life back

Nik lost 40lbs with LighterLife after years of gradual weight gain and constant back pain. What started as supporting his wife turned into a life-changing decision for them both.

Today, he’s taking fewer painkillers, keeping up with his grandchildren and looking forward to celebrating his 40th wedding anniversary on safari feeling healthier than he has in years.

My clothes weren’t wearing out. They were becoming too small.

For Nik, the emotional impact crept up slowly. Over three years, he replaced his suits three times because each one stopped fitting. Even everyday tasks changed: “I needed to sit down to put my socks on and could no longer balance on one leg while putting on my trousers.”

Like a lot of people, Nik talked himself out of the obvious. “I told myself clothes were made smaller these days, that it was just middle-aged spread, that I could lose the weight whenever I wanted.” Deep down he knew it was his lifestyle: constant grazing on sugary, high-carb snacks, oversized portions, never leaving food on his plate, and always finishing with dessert. “I had a real weakness for gummy bears.”

I always believed I could manage my weight on my own, but only ever for a short while

Nik wasn’t a serial dieter. Apart from an old stint with WeightWatchers, he relied on willpower.

“I’d lose a bit, feel good about it, and then slowly slip back into old habits. It took me a long time to realise that relying on willpower alone just wasn’t enough for me.”

The turning point: “This time, we decided to do it together.”

The catalyst was his wife. She had struggled with her own weight and had previously found success with LighterLife. Encouraging her to restart the plan made Nik confront his own reality quietly, without saying it out loud. They cleared the house of snacks and committed together. That shared decision became the moment everything changed.

I didn’t feel hungry, and for the first time, structure helped me rather than restricted me.

Nik’s first week surprised him. He expected hunger and cravings, but instead felt settled, slept better, and stopped wandering to the cupboards. The simplicity of the plan was a revelation:

  • No calorie counting
  • No weighing or guessing
  • A clear daily routine
  • Foodpacks he genuinely enjoyed

His porridge pots and bolognese pots became comforting staples, and even his birthday was celebrated with a LighterLife mug cake. It kept him on track without feeling deprived.

That structure helped him sleep better, feel less sluggish and stop constantly thinking about food. The weekly weigh-ins with his mentor became another source of motivation.

“I won’t lie. Seeing that number drop gave me a real adrenaline rush.”

I always knew my mentor was there if I needed her.

Nik didn’t join the CBT Mindfulness Groups. Group settings simply weren’t right for him. But his mentor, Natalie provided exactly the level of support he needed. Weekly check‑ins kept him accountable without ever feeling overwhelmed.

His wife’s involvement in the Groups also became a powerful source of shared learning. They talked through everything together, giving Nik the emotional insight without needing to be in the room.

I finally feel lighter, in every sense.

The medication tells its own story. Two prolapsed discs once meant escalating painkillers and the looming possibility of surgery. Now Nik takes one or two painkillers a week, not daily. “It’s been one of the clearest signs of how much this journey has helped me, physically and emotionally.”

This year’s family holiday, cycling with his three young grandchildren, was the proof. “I haven’t run out of energy, I’ve kept pace with them, and I’ve genuinely enjoyed the cycling rather than just enduring it.”

Even the smallest moments remind him how far he’s come.

“I can actually stand on one leg to put my socks on now.”

Nik’s advice

“Weight loss is completely personal. You might only want, or need, to lose a few pounds. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that it’s your challenge, your goal.” Nik’s message to anyone considering it is simple: take the first step, however big or small.

“Being part of the LighterLife family means you’ll always have someone by your side.”

For him, LighterLife wasn’t just about losing weight. It was about regaining control, building healthier habits and discovering that with the right structure and support, lasting change really is possible.
