Ketosis
Have you been hearing a lot about ketosis recently but don’t
know what is means?
Ketosis is a normal metabolic state. It is the
process your body uses to convert fats into energy.
During ketosis your body switches from
using glucose for energy to using stored body fat and dietary fat
for energy. We’ve evolved to store fat for times of need and
ketosis is the process by which we can live off that fat for
survival.
Most people, no matter what type of diet
they’re eating, will enter a state of ketosis at some point within
a 24-hour period e.g. when asleep.
Ketosis converts body fat to energy
If you consume fewer calories than your body
requires, first you’ll use up glycogen stored in your liver. Once
this is depleted, after one to three days, you’ll start to use body
fat. This is ketosis.
When this fat is broken down, the resulting fatty acids are used by
your liver to produce ketones. These are a water-soluble form of
energy that can be used by most tissues as fuel. Ketones can also
pass across the blood-brain barrier to be used by your brain.
Any excess ketones will be excreted in your
blood, breath and urine. When losing weight on the LighterLife
Programme, ketone sticks are used to test for ketones in your
urine. This simple procedure lets you know you are in ketosis.
Ketosis and hunger
Being in ketosis can reduce your appetite,
make you feel really well and full of energy. It occurs
as a result of being on a low-energy, low-carbohydrate diet such as
LighterLife.

Is ketosis anything to do with
ketoacidosis?
No. Ketosis as result of being on a
low-energy, low-carbohydrate diet such as LighterLife, is nothing
to do with ketoacidosis.
Ketoacidosis is a potentially life-threatening condition most often
associated with uncontrolled insulin-deficient type1 diabetes.
Ketoacidosis does not occur in people who have even a small amount
of insulin, whether from natural production or artificially
administered.
