Juliet: “When bariatric surgery failed I tried LighterLife. I wish I’d found out about it sooner”

For years Juliet had tried a variety of slimming clubs but none of them worked for her, so in 2012 Juliet had bariatric surgery. By 2015 she weighed just under 23st and was at the top end of a size 30. LighterLife worked for her where bariatric surgery failed. She explains:

“If I knew then, what I know now - I would never have had bariatric surgery.

"My weight began creeping up after I left university. I joined various diet clubs over the years but for every stone I lost, I would end up putting it all on again - plus half. So in 2012 I had bariatric surgery, thinking it was the solution I was looking for. It wasn't.

“Before I had surgery I had a session with a psychologist, but it wasn't long enough and didn't help me get to the root cause of my overeating. I was warned that having surgery was not an answer on it's own, and that I would have to manage my eating afterwards. Unfortunately the support post surgery wasn't provided so I regained. If I'd have had CBT in a group setting, that reinforced the techniques and built on them each week, combined with the right nutritional support it may have worked."

If I'd known about LighterLife sooner it would have made such a difference

"Without attending weekly group sessions with my trained LighterLife counsellor, Carol, I would never have discovered the reasons why I overate in the first place.   • "Did you know It's virtually impossible to track how much you consume if you sleep walk through eating. I never really understood why I kept putting on weight but now I realise I was sleepwalking through my meals. Without realising it certain things became habit. For example, I would eat a chunk of cheese when I was making a meal for my family. I did it without question, and it soon became part of my routine."


  • Going to a slimming club (Tier 2)

  • "Which I tried but could never maintain."


  • Having surgery (Tier 4)

  • "Which nobody warns you might not work, if you cheat it."

    "Nobody explained that there was another option that should be made available (Tier 3). A series of dedicated centres with experts in weight loss, talking therapies and exercise.

    "People need to be made aware that there are other solutions available, and given the support to achieve long term weight management."

    Juliet lost 13st* on the LighterLife Total plan. She continues to attend her management groups to maintain his weight loss*.
