Metabolic rate is determined by how much you weigh
This is regardless of how you diet or how often. A good analogy
for metabolic rate is that a large house needs more energy to keep
it warm than a small house. In the same way, a larger body requires
more energy to keep it warm than a small body.
Your metabolic rate is the rate at which your body uses
kilocalories. Approximately 60-80% is used for essential
bodily functions including:
- Breathing.
- Pumping blood.
- Keeping warm.
Most of the rest is used for activity, hence
the more you move, the more kilocalories you will use.
On any diet there will be an initial small reduction in metabolic
rate of approximately 10-15%. This is known as 'diet mode'.
Once you’ve lost weight, your metabolic rate won’t return to its
previous level because a lighter person doesn’t need as many
kilocalories to move around as a heavier person. Weight-loss
programmes such as LighterLife don’t produce losses in
metabolic rate beyond that expected from the loss of weight.
