What does my body need?

To stay healthy the human body needs the recommended daily allowance of the nutrients listed below:

  • Protein is essential for growth and repair of the body.
  • Carbohydrate is a source of energy.
  • Fats have many important functions, including storage of fat soluble vitamins, brain development and keeping the immune system healthy.
  • Fibre helps keep the digestive system healthy and may play a role in reducing the risk of heart disease.

Vitamins

  • Vitamin A is essential for your skin and mucous membranes (in your nose, lungs and gut). It’s also needed for normal growth, night vision and the immune system.
  • B Vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6) are essential for digesting and producing energy from food, as well as being important for growth and repair of tissues, healthy skin, heart, brain and nervous system.
  • Vitamin B12 is vital for the metabolism of protein, the production of red blood cells and DNA, and for maintaining a healthy nervous system.
  • Folate (folacin, folic acid) is a B-complex vitamin that helps in the production of red blood cells and DNA. It enables your body to metabolise protein in foods and produce amino acids that are used to build new body tissue. It's particularly important for pregnancy and can prevent risk of birth defects in the unborn baby.
  • Vitamin C is a protective antioxidant vitamin, vital for good wound healing and a healthy immune system. It assists with the absorption of iron from foods.
  • Vitamin D is essential for strong, healthy bones, teeth and cartilage, because it helps your body to absorb calcium and phosphorus. It may also help protect against cancer.
  • Vitamin E is an important antioxidant vitamin, protecting the body from potentially damaging free radicals.
  • Vitamin K enables your blood to clot when you cut yourself, and it also helps to build strong bones.

Minerals

  • Calcium is essential to build healthy bones and teeth. It also plays a vital role for nerves and muscle function as well as blood clotting and blood pressure.
  • Phosphorous is essential for healthy bones, teeth and muscle as well as playing a role in energy metabolism and cell membranes.
  • Iron is a key component of haemoglobin in red blood cells. Haemoglobin carries oxygen around the blood and protects us against iron deficiency - anaemia. Iron also plays a role in energy metabolism and enzyme function.
  • Magnesium is essential for energy production and to maintain strong teeth and bones, as well as helping nerve function.
  • Sodium plays a vital role in regulation of fluid balance and blood pressure.
  • Potassium is also important for regulation of fluid balance as well as playing a role in acid/base regulation, muscle contractions, cellular functions including nervous function and the heartbeat. Potassium may also have a role in regulation of blood pressure.
  • Zinc is essential for growth and repair of tissues, healthy skin, reproductive development, the immune system and plays a role in your sense of smell and taste.
  • Iodine functions as part of thyroid hormones. These control metabolic processes such as temperature regulation. It is also important for neurological development and energy metabolism.
  • Chloride helps regulate fluids in the body and is an essential part of digestive juices.
  • Selenium is a component of many enzymes that protect the body from free radical damage and therefore may have a protective role against cancer and heart disease. It is also needed for thyroid function and the immune system.
  • Copper is an important component of many enzymes and helps the body to use iron. It is also needed for healthy bones and blood vessels.
  • Manganese is needed for formation of bone and cartilage, energy metabolism and is a component of important enzymes in the body.
  • Molybdenum is important for enzyme function.
  • Chromium may influence metabolism and enhance insulin action.
